Welcome

As Liberal Democrats, we do not believe that political decisions should be made on the basis of whether you are male or female, whether you were born into a wealthy family, where you were born, the colour of your skin, your sexuality, whether you speak English or Welsh, whether you are 'working class', 'middle class', or 'upper class', whether you went to the 'right' school, or whether you know the 'right people'.

Liberal Democrats stand for a fair, free and open society.

The effects of Brexit are already being felt.

The value of the pound has plummeted.

Inflation has risen. Growth in the economy has slowed, and the government is already borrowing billions more to fill the gap in lost tax revenue.

The simple fact is that the proposed EU-UK security treaty is likely to fail unless Theresa May drops her opposition to the European Court of Justice.

The government has announced it will seek a new treaty with the EU to preserve vital cooperation against crime and terrorism.

However, access to tools like the European Arrest Warrant, Europol and security databases all require abiding by rulings from the EU Court of Justice, an issue Theresa May has made a red line.

Today at #LDConf we have called for the setting up of a tough new watchdog to protect the environment from threats posed by Brexit.

In a conference motion we called for the creation of an Office for Environmental Responsibility that would ensure laws on air quality or the cleanliness of beaches are properly enforced.

Theresa May must use her speech next week in Florence to change course and unilaterally guarantee the rights of EU nationals, to prevent a 'Brexodus' of thousands of nurses and teachers working in Britain's schools and hospitals.

In a conference motion passed today, we demanded that the government urgently publish a review into the impact its Brexit policies are having on staffing shortfalls in public services.

In a motion passed today at our Autumn conference, we have called on the government to set a global example by bringing forward Britain's climate targets ten years from 2050 to 2040.

As part of the motion, we have also condemned, in the strongest possible terms, President Trump's climate change denial and his decision to withdraw the US from the Paris Agreement.

Like many of you, I have just returned from my first break since the General Election, and I hope that you are refreshed and ready for a busy political autumn.

I wrote to you a few weeks ago to let you know that Tim Gordon, our Chief Executive, had announced that he was leaving the party after nearly five years.

I have had a good summer, meeting Liberal Democrat members all over the UK in 15 Q&A sessions. It has been great to listen to your ideas, and a pleasure to answer questions face-to-face about the future of our Party and the country.

The tour has also been a welcome opportunity to outline my plans to place the Liberal Democrats at the centre of UK political life: a credible, effective Party of national and local government, and a voice of sanity on Europe and the economy.
