Stitch up or botch up? AM demands reassurance over possible threat to disabled claimants’ homes.

Welsh Liberal Democrats Housing Spokesperson, Peter Black is looking for reassurances from the Labour Government that disabled claimants will not lose their homes as a result of recent changes in benefit rules

Mr. Black said: "The new harsher work capability assessment to be introduced this month may well result in some of the 200,000 invalidity and special disablement allowance claimants in Wales being reclassified as capable of work and pushed onto Jobseekers Allowance as a consequence.

"At the same time, Labour Ministers in Westminster have announced that new Jobseekers Allowance claimants will have their mortgage interest paid for just two years.

"No-one disputes that having a job which pays a good wage is a marvellous outcome for disabled people, and their families.

"However, with unemployment rising once again, some disabled claimants may find it increasingly difficult to find a job within Labour's two year time frame. If that happens, how are such disabled claimants to avoid repossession of their homes?

"This is either a stitch up or a botch up. Either way, Labour must take action now to reassure disabled claimants that they will not lose their homes because the government is struggling to save money." Ends
